If you experience sudden discomfort, burning, or the need to squint in your eyes when you step outside on a sunny day or enter a room with bright lights, what you are experiencing may be more than simple glare.

    What is Photophobia?

Although photophobia literally means "fear of light", it is actually a condition in which the eyes are extremely sensitive to light, resulting in pain or discomfort. It is not a disease but a symptom of another underlying health problem, such as migraine, dry eye syndrome, or corneal damage.

A healthy eye adjusts the light falling on the retina by shrinking the pupil according to the amount of light. However, in individuals with photophobia, there is overstimulation in this pathway from the eye to the brain. Photosensitive cells in the retina perceive even normal lighting as a threat, triggering the trigeminal nervous system and creating a feeling of pain.

What are the symptoms of photophobia?

    What Causes Light Sensitivity?

The most common cause of eyes overreacting to light is migraine attacks; More than 80% of patients experience this condition. Apart from this, ophthalmological problems such as dry eye syndrome, corneal scratches, uveitis (inflammation of the eye) or cataracts are also the main culprits. In addition, central nervous system diseases such as meningitis can also cause sudden light sensitivity.

    Do Photophobia Glasses Work?

Yes, specially designed photophobia glasses can significantly reduce sensitivity by filtering out certain wavelengths of light. In particular, rose or pink filters, known as FL-41, provide relief by blocking light in the blue-green spectrum that triggers pain. While standard sunglasses block all light, special lenses produced as photophobia glasses filter only the disturbing wavelengths and prevent the eye from adjusting to the dark.

    How to Treat Photophobia?

An effective photophobia treatment is based primarily on identifying and treating the main problem causing light sensitivity. If the cause is dry eye, artificial tear drops are applied, if it is migraine, neurological medications are applied, and if it is an infection, antibiotic treatment is applied. Light sensitivity usually resolves on its own when the underlying cause is eliminated.

    Frequently Asked Questions

    Is photophobia permanent?

This situation is sometimes temporary; It may appear and disappear, for example, during an eye infection or migraine attack. It usually improves when the underlying cause is treated.

What is the difference between photophobia glasses and normal sunglasses?

Photophobia glasses (FL-41 filter) only filter out disturbing wavelengths, they do not prevent the eye from adjusting to the dark. Normal sunglasses block all light.

When should I consult a doctor?

If visual acuity decreases, extreme photophobia or severe pain in the eye occurs, an ophthalmologist should be consulted without delay.
