What Is an Eye Ultrasound (A-Scan and B-Scan)?
Contents

Eye ultrasound is a painless and safe imaging method used to examine the internal structure of the eye in detail. It is used when examining the back of the eye becomes difficult due to conditions such as dense cataracts, bleeding, or inflammation.

    What Is A-Scan USG?

This type of ultrasound measures the anterior-posterior length of the eye in millimeters. It is especially performed before cataract surgery and smart lens (IOL) surgery; the power of the lens to be placed in the eye during surgery is calculated based on this measurement. The procedure takes very little time and is completely painless.

    What Is B-Scan USG?

This method images the internal structure of the eye like an ultrasound film. It is preferred in cases such as dense cataracts, vitreous hemorrhage, retinal tears, or suspected tumors. The patient closes their eyes, gel is applied to the eyelid, and the probe is gently moved across the area. The procedure is completely painless and takes a few minutes.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Is preparation required for eye ultrasound?

No special preparation is required. Numbing drops may be used during the procedure, and lenses or glasses are removed. No pain is felt, and daily life can be resumed immediately afterward.

What is the difference between A-Scan and B-Scan?

A-Scan measures the length of the eye and is used for lens selection. B-Scan images the internal structure of the eye and is preferred when retinal problems, tumors, or bleeding are suspected.

    Does eye ultrasound involve radiation?

No. This method uses sound waves and does not involve radiation, which is why it is considered safe.
